Reviews
The book chronicles the life of Christa Lundh and her family through three generations. The family story begins in 1924, highlighting the various triumphs and sorrows of daily existence as the children came of age under the tumultuous regime of Hitler and Stalin. Separated by war and by the communist ideology, Hans, the eldest of three, and only boy, was drafted to serve in Hitler's navy. After the war, he migrated to Canada leaving his mother and sisters behind in Europe. A business assignment to Jamaica predicated a love affair with an island to which he encouraged the matriarch-headed household to migrate. As the former furniture makers all female arrived in post war Jamaica, they were faced with new realities as they were now compelled to learn a new culture and a second language. Since their condition of entry denied them employment as workers, they were obliged to set up a business in order to earn a living. This they did, transitioning from various business ventures such as the production of souvenirs and a restaurant. Fleeing communism in Germany, they encountered the philosophy again under Manley's administration of Jamaica. In spite of the mass exodus during the 70s the women persevered until they built and now operate one of the more well established, family owned businesses the Hotel Four Seasons.
