This fifth edition of "An Introduction to Neurosurgery" has a new co-author and re-written and updated chapters. There are also many new illustrations that take in CT & MRI advances. Neurosurgical problems increasingly involve specialists from other fields, and this book is directed at the many doctors, nurses and others who now need to know something about neurosurgery. This includes those associated with neurosurgical units or dealing with patients in general hospitals before and after neurosurgical care. This edition, like its predecessors, covers in a practical fashion the emergency, elective investigative and therapeutic procedures surgeons use. The revision has been extensive. The preliminary chapters on space-occuping lesions have been reorganized and many later chapters rewritten to take account of modern investigative and management techniques. Throughout the text the emphasis is on what the neurosurgeon regards as urgent and why, and what he can and cannot achieve. Anatomy, physiology and psychology are dealt with only in the clinical context and topics are arranged in the order in which the clinician naturally works. There are also numerous clear line drawings and radiographic illustrations, along with up-to-date suggestions for further reading.
