Combining science studies and technology studies, this collection of 19 articles addresses how people claim citizenship in their ways of dealing with far-reaching issues of science that directly affect their lives and cultures. Contributors address how globalization has affected participation in policy-making as it relates to science, how "risk" is newly-defined by the involvement of citizens outside the scientific community, the influence of citizens on "irrational" science, the relationship amongst knowledge, justice and democracy, and involvement of citizens in issues of genetics, AIDS, public health, biotechnology, GM foods, and environmental sciences. Concluding articles address the politics of engagement, including the democratization of science and whether it is opening up or closing down debate.
