Among the earliest films ever made in Cuba, dating from the end of the last century, are newsreels containing footage of the Spanish-Cuban-American War. Since that time film has never been far from the centre of Cuban cultural politics. The early chapters of this history of Cuban cinema, the first to be written in English, focus not only on the films made but also on Cuba's position in Latin American culture and its role within the international economy of Hollywood. In the twenty-five years since the revolution there has been urgent debate about the role of the cinema within the cultural life of the country and about the kinds of films best suited to its needs. The latter part of the book is concerned with these discussions, with the restructuring of the film industry after the revolution and with the achievements of contemporary film-makers.
