The work of 82 of Jamaica's artists displayed in 132 colour plates are represented in this elegant volume. There are two essays on the Jamaican art movement since 1992; the first by David Boxer examines the outpourings of Manley, Dunkley, Huie, Kappo, Hyde, Parboosingh and Watson in the social context of colonialism, the national stirrings of the 1930s, the drive towards independence and the international thrust of the avant garde in the 1960s and 1970s. Veerle Poupeye writes of contemporary Jamaican art, expanding the overview to include young artists who practice outside the island but who have retained much of the special ethos that informs Jamaican art.
