The University of the West Indies tells the story of the founding and development of the U.W.I over the past four decades. Without ceremony or fanfare, the first office of the University College of the West Indies was opened in Kingston, Jamaica in February 1947. Starting with a School of Medicine at Mona, Jamaica, the University developed faculties of Natural Sciences and Arts and a pioneering Department of Extra- mural Studies directed by Sir Phillip Sherlock.
