Andrew Salke (January 30, 1928- April 28, 1995) joined Hampshire College, New England, as professor of writing in the School of Humanities and Arts in 1976. He was born in 1928 in Colon, Panama, and held Jamaican citizenship. He was educated at St. Georges College and Munro College in Jamaica, then attended the University of London, graduating with honors in English Literature. Additionally, he held a diploma in Education, History and Philosophy from the Institute of Education, University of London. He was an Instructor in English Language and Literature at a comprehensive school in London and a private instructor in Latin and Literature. He taught Greek language and literature as well. For twenty years, he was a freelance broadcaster, interviewer and scriptwriter for the BBC. He wrote and edited some thirty books (including five novels, four books, two short story collections, and eight anthologies) and composed thirty-five radio plays. He was a guest lecturer on Third World Literature at universities in Britain, Cuba, Canada, France, Germany, Guyana, Jamaica and the United States of America until his death in 1995. Andrew Salkey is sorely missed.
